Argumentative Essay: The Crucible In The Crucible Elizabeth, John Proctor's wife could have stepped up and spoken out against her husband and Abigail. The author of The Crucible, Arthur Miller, wrote The Crucible in the 1950s as a way of mimicking the insanity of the Communists during the Red Scare. During the Red Scare, many American citizens were accused of being communists. Arthur Miller himself was also accused of being a communist. This relates to the story of The Crucible because the people of Salem were accusing each other of being witches. In this story, I believe that Elizabeth Proctor could have ended the mass hysteria in Salem by speaking out against her husband and confronting him about his affair sooner. Her husband, John Proctor, played a vital position in the hysteria going on in Salem. In the movie The Crucible, when Elizabeth Proctor is brought out into the courtroom to be questioned about her husband's affair she admits to having a suspicion of her husband and Abigail. She could have confirmed her suspicion earlier on and confronted John about it. If anything Elizabeth may have also been able to stop the affair before it even happened. In Act 2 of The Crucible when the proctors were having their awkward dinner together Elizabeth could have told John Proctor he needed to come clean about his actions with Abigail Williams. By Proctor admitting his sins sooner he may have been able to put an end to the hysteria. In the movie The Crucible early on we see Abigail and the Girls in the room with Betty as she was sick and thought to be dying. Later on, Abigail screams saying she saw the devil, and convinces everyone to play along with her tricks. She then starts to accuse innocent people of also being seen with the devil. I feel if Proctor would have spoken of his affair sooner the people of Salem would see this act of Abigail to be an act. They may have not believed her and her accusations of witchcraft because they know she is not
