One parallel between McCarthyism and The Crucible is that immense power was given to those who accused others. McCarthy’s unsubstantiated claims ruined the lives of many people living in America, and the girls’ unsubstantiated accusations ruined the lives of many people living in Salem. Both McCarthy’s actions and the girls’ actions led to increased hostility and hysteria. In both instances, the accusers could accuse anyone they wished to accuse, and they did not have to show much or any evidence; their claims were unreliable and erratic. This is portrayed in Documents B and C.

In history there have been many major events that have shaped the times we live in. Two of the major events of our time are the "witchunts" of the Salem Witch Trials and McCarthyism. The Crucible is a 1953 play by American playwright Arthur Miller. It is a drama and fictional story of the Salem Witch Trials that took place in the Massachusetts Bay Colony during 1692-1693. Miller wrote the play as a parable for McCarthyism, when the United States government ostracized people for being communists.
Is personal integrity more important than survival? The dictionary defines integrity as the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. The Salem witch trials in history shows how men and women had to choose between their own morals and their faith. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible the people show their value of personal integrity over life while maintaining their reputation and good name to pass down to generations to come. Giles Corey is a man of integrity who cares for his family and friends in the community.
As time has passed, throughout history, during different periods of time there are parallels. There are three eras that we are focussed on, where there are three types of people during each era. The three different eras that we’re focusing on, are The Salem Witch Trials (1600s), The McCarthy Era (1950s), and Today (2000s); the three types of people are the people who are the reasons why there’s accusations towards the accused, the accused, and finally the accusers. In The Crucible, or during the Salem Witch Trials, the person that’s the reason why characters were accused is John Proctor. The accuser in the play, who decides to point fingers at everyone, is Abigail Williams.

Ryker Moses Mr.G English 11A 16 December 2022 Arthur and his Crucible There are many reasons why people will write a play, book, or movie. For example, some people draft books or plays to escape their problems or to relax themselves. Aruther Miller is no exception to this principle. Many aspects of Mr. Millers’ life influenced his writing of his book the Crucible.
It all started in Salem, Massachusetts. Reverend Parris’s grand daughter Abigail and some of her friends were out in the woods dancing. They were dancing by a hot kettle of boiling water. 8 months before this, Abigail was released from the Proctor’s house because she was having an affair with John Proctor. When asked about what they were doing in the woods Tituba said she was doing witchcraft and in order not to die she started accusing other people of it, and those people were arrested.
The threat of Communism and the Red Scare put fear of group mentality into many people during the late 1940-50s. The authors of 1984 and The Crucible used their respective works to comment on the social injustice going on in their own lives, which connects to injustice the exists throughout time anywhere in the world. Miller wrote his play, set in 1692, about Puritans and the Salem witch trials because he believed that, similar to his trial for HUAC in the 1950s, the trials in Salem were caused by false accusations and mass hysteria led by powerful individuals. In 1984, Orwell creates a world in the near future that shows group mentality and its threat to conform society with the government.
