The Crucible Webquest The puritans were a group of people that wanted to separate from England. They wanted to separate because they believed that England was too catholic in belief. The king of England ruled over the church and state, so when they disagreed with the church, they were against the king. Their protestant belief caused them to not be welcome in their own country. This caused them to take action. The action that they chose to take was to sail to America. Doing this, the puritans would be free from their religious persecution. They would no longer have to be told to be under control of a corrupt system of belief. On their journey, they did not want to break from England’s system. Their goal was to reform it. When people had medical issues, people believed that there was a witch or demon cursing them. This is what happened during the salem witch trials. People in the past believed that when something medically wrong was happening, it was because of witches or witchcraft, because they did not have an understanding of sicknesses and what causes them. The Salem Witch Trials began with a group of young girls who had became ill. They experienced problems such as seizures and odd behaviors. The people brought in a doctor, but he could not find out what the problem was. It was concluded that there was a witch that caused her to be ill. People in Salem prayed and fasted to try to rid themselves of the devil’s influence. The worry of this spread rapidly throughout by word of mouth. People were brought before the girls to decide who the witch was that caused their illnesses. The accused would be hanged or killed in another means if they were chosen by the girls to be the witch. The girls who chose the witch were major players in the trials. The doctor that declared it to be the cause of witches was also a major
