John Proctor is basically the tragic hero of “The Crucible”, the reason for this is statement is because the tries to save his wife from being hanged. He cares about his children, he also has tried not to cheat on his wife Elizabeth, while she was ill. At the end of the story Proctor is hanged due of his confession of being a warlock. In the rising action of the story John Proctor is trying to avoid Abigail, he states that “But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again.”
Proctor Problems Intro: In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, several unusual events unfolded in the town of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. A series of prosecutions were held no matter the age, and many relationships were affected. One particular person who was effected is John Proctor. John struggles to find peace with himself throughout the play withlist pleasing his wife.
Although Aristotle states that one must meet certain qualifications to be a tragic hero, like being of noble descent, Proctor does meet all of the other qualifications. Proctor meets the qualifications by sleeping with Abigail, by being accused of witchcraft, and by being highly praised in this community. To be a tragic hero his/her downfall is one's fault. Proctor decided to created his downfall when he has an affair with Reveron Hails orphaned niece, Abigail. Proctor knew what he did was wrong but his pride was too high to admit it.
This first quotation takes place in Act 1 between Abagail Williams and John Proctor at Reverend Hale’s home. Abigail was talking to proctor about what really happened the night her and the others conjured spirits because proctor was going to get Mary warren but she wasn’t there which left them alone together. The quote takes the readers into the past to the affair Abigail had with John Proctor. John is trying to put the affair behind him although he still has feelings for her but Abigail is still very jealous of the life Elizabeth Proctor lives and she begs John to come back to her.

John Proctor can be seen in both ways as a tragic hero and not as one. I personally belive that Proctor is a tragic hero. He presents many wasy throughout the story how he is very honorable and trustworthy but, he definitely has some flaws. He displays three very noble qualities throughout the witch trials which are bravery, honesty, and an overall goal to save lives even to the point where he sacrificed his. While many argue John is a bad man because he committed adultery they are entirely mistaken. Just because he had one bad sin gives no right to anybody to call him a bad person when clearly the good side of him is shown more than the bad. John Proctor is a good man who displays the characteristics of a hero and could be seen as one for giving his life for his friends.
