The beginning of Act Four starts out in a Salem Jail containing Tituba and Sarah Good. The plot initiates with Sarah Good and Tituba seeming crazy as they say that the Devil is off to get them and they will go to Barbados. They both claimed as they were taken out of their cell by Herrick, that the cow outside their window was the devil. Tituba offered Herrick if he would like to join them on their journey.
Reverend Parris begins to question Abigail about what they were doing in the woods. Betty still could not wake so Reverend Parris sent for Hale. Hale specializes witchcraft things. Hale believe that there is something supernaturally wrong with Betty. When Reverend Parris questions Abigail it he brings up that Abigail was let go by the Proctors and has been re-hired in months.
The times back then were terrible. The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller in 1953 about The Salem Witch Trials of 1692.McCarthyism was the “witch hunt” for the communist in 1953.the parallels between The Crucible and McCarthyism are naming names,lack of proof ,and reststance. The first reason they are parallel is because of naming names. Hollywood director Elia Kazan went in front of the HUAC twice. The first time he did not confess and names.
Proctor fell in love with Abigail’s persistent attitude and would come join her at night. Elizabeth knew something was wrong as she felt him distance and casted Abigail out onto the streets since she was their maid at the time. Abigail lied and told people it was because she did not want to be a servant for the Proctors. She became furious with Elizabeth Proctor so much that she went against her own religion and danced in the woods while drinking chicken blood in hopes Elizabeth would die. Proctor told Abigail “Abby, you’ll put it out of mind.
In the midst of the hysteria that has taken Salem by storm, the girls lie in order to save themselves from accusation of witchcraft. However, to spare themselves, they must sacrifice others. After many other women and men were accused the tide eventually made its way toward Elizabeth Proctor. When Abigail originally told the courtroom that she saw Elizabeth Proctor with the devil, Hale was there to hear it; and he was also the one to break the news to Elizabeth, “Question Abigail Williams about the Gospel, not myself! Hale stares at her.
She is caught dancing in the woods and blames it on witchraft, sending Salem into hysteria. Abigail’s lust for John Proctor results in her accusing his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, of withcraft. Hale goes to the Proctor household to investigate and upon arrival he says, “Abigail were stabbed tonight; a needle were found stuck into her belly.” (Miller 76) Abigail is able to set up Elizabeth through the manipulation of Mary Warren, who brings in a doll that also has a needle stuck in its belly.
Abigail used to be a nanny to the Proctor’s but was fired when Mrs. Proctor found out that Abigail and John Proctor had sex. Abigail thinks she’s in love with John, but she has sex confused with love. During the scene when Abigail confesses her love to John, Betty is listening to their whole conversion. Goody Proctor didn’t expose Abby because that would also reflect her husband. Thomas Putnam is the son of the wealthiest man in village but got cut out of some of his inheritance in his father’s will.
And they talk about all of the trials they are going thru and how they are going to do it to get everything to make things better. After seven days, alone in their farmhouse outside of town, John and Elizabeth Proctor talk about the continuous trials and the heightening number of townsfolk who have been blamed for being witches. Elizabeth encourages her better half to impugn Abigail as a cheat; he won't, and she winds up plainly desirous, blaming him for as yet harboring affections for her. Mary Warren, their hireling and one of Abigail's hover, comes back from Salem with news that Elizabeth has been blamed for witchcraft yet the court did not seek after the allegation.

This is what many people in the town of Salem had to go through during the time of the Salem Witch Trials. People's motives such as: gaining and maintaining power, and aspirations for what other people had caused them to make irrational, and atrocious decisions. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, desire and power drive characters to create chaos in the community.
Good afternoon teachers and fellow peers, In order to achieve their own personal and communal ambitions, figures in society manipulate and persuade people through events and situations to conform to their own political agenda. In the 1955 prescribed text, “The Crucible,” playwright Arthur Miller establishes the exploitative behaviour of characters through dramatised staging features. Similarly in the 1964 related text, “The Times They are A-Changin’,” Bob Dylan insights individual ambitions through musical and poetic devices. The shared ideas of the modernist era such as the significance of religion and political hegemony are investigated by both composers in their perspective texts.
In conclusion, The Crucible is similar to modern day life and human nature will most likely not change anytime soon. Human nature was to blame for the disasters that happened in Salem 1692 and is to blame for my negative personal encounters. Human nature is what character is made of during trying situations and that is where the title of the play gets its name. A crucible is a ceramic or metal container in which metals or other substances may be melted or subjected to very high temperatures. The main purpose of a crucible is to see what the metal is made of.
In 1900 one night in Lidtke Mill there was a horrible incident. A young boy was playing by the water. Out of nowhere he got pushed by a guy covered in black. The kid didn’t know how to swim so he drowned. Thirty years later, a group of friends went to go skip rocks on the water.
All was quiet on the farm near Salem. The only light through the darkness was the muffled brightness of the moon. Air whistled through cracked windows. An elderly couple sat in the dim light of the fire lit in the parlor. (mood)
