Thirdly, throughout the play Judge Danforth is gullible to Abigail’s manipulations and lies. One of the instance where Danforth’s gullibility towards Abigail is shown is when Abigail blatantly accuses Reverend Hale’s wife to be in alliance with Lucifer (The Crucible) to which he replies that “it is not possible for a minister’s wife to be associated with the devil” (the crucible). Here Abigail is proven wrong by Judge Danforth because he is certain that a minister’s family can never be approached by the devil as per the commandments. Despite this, he chooses to believe that Abigail has probably mistaken to identify the woman associated with Lucifer. This shows that he totally believes in Abigail and that, all her previous accusations are valid.

At the beginning half of the play, for Hale it was strictly business by following the law to maintain order, and as time passed, he played a major contribution in the beginning of the witch trials. For instance, in his first scene of the play he goes into Parris' home to help his niece, who is expected to wield a spell cast on her, and is conveying an overwhelming heap of books that are "`..are weighted with authority'" (34).He organizes himself up to disregard any conclusions based on emotional association or sensibility by keeping within reach law-induced books to guide him. He assures that his books will help to maintain control over the emerging dilemma. What's more, when two church-going ladies, Rebecca Nurse and Martha Corey, happened to be accused of witchcraft, the ladies' spouses start to contend the case, yet Hale still seemingly defends the court. : "`I have seen too many frightful proofs in court
This is shown by Putnam’s attitude to his accuser and to his daughter. While he threatened to take legal action against Giles Corey for accusing him of the crime of and how he persuaded his daughter to lie and accuse George Jacobs for witchcraft. Putnam’s character conveys the theme that “ Jealousy and greed can be very destructive” because of how easily others in the village could find him guilty of a horrid crime that started with pure greed and jealousy. In “The Crucible” while in couselship with the other members of the court, Giles Corey makes an accusation against Putnam. He accuses Putnam by saying he “ coldly prompted his daughter to cry witchery upon George Jacobs that is now in jail” (Miller 96).
“Character Analysis over The Crucible” Arthur Miller is a commonly-known playwright, most famous for his 1953 play, The Crucible. The basis for The Crucible came from the witch trials which occurred in Salem, Massachusetts during the puritan era. Miller even uses some of the same characters in his dramatized play that were a part of the original witch trials in Salem. However, Miller made a few alterations to the historical members of the Salem society in order to suit his dramatic purpose in The Crucible, particularly Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Reverend Samuel Parris.
Giles Corey throughout the entire play proves he is the comic relief master. He is most likely the one to turn the reader’s very serious and dramatic scene into a few comical lines. In act III of The Crucible, during what a dramatic court scene that consists of everyone accusing each other, Giles Corey accusing Mr. Putnam of forcing his daughter to accuse another women. Mr. putnam responds by telling the judge that this accusation is a lie to which Giles responds by saying, "A fart on Thomas Putnam, that is what I say to that!" (Miller 96).
The human mind is far more complex than humans themselves realize. The concept of free will and its limits can alter either the person or their life. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller presents the idea that misguided motives lead to decisions that wrong others by fearing what they don’t understand. The fear of the worst to occur is what fuels these people to encourage unreliable reasons for misinterpreted conduct.
One of the biggest shocks people hear when it comes to the Crucible is that those characters were real, which makes the weight of their deaths that much heavier. A total of 20 people died in the Salem Witch Trials: 19 of them were hanged, and one was tortured to death by pressing; that person was Giles Corey. Not much is said about Giles Corey in the play, but it is said that actions speak louder than words, and that is true for him. When he refused to utter the names of others that might’ve been involved with witchcraft, he set himself up to be tortured to death and yet never said anything other than “more weight” (Miller, 207). Although he is a minor character, Giles Corey plays the role of an anti-hero, who not only displays probably the biggest act of bravery in the whole play, but also demonstrates the fact that although the judges were “learned and all-powerful”, a high education and obsession for power cannot silence the tenacity displayed by such a truthful character.
