The Culprit: Philip Malloy On March 28, a student by the name of Philip Malloy is disrespectfully singing the “Star- Spangled Banner.” The teacher the student had at this time, Miss Margaret Narwin, did her job and asked Malloy to stop. When this incident occurred the following day Malloy is asked to see the assistant principal, Dr. Joseph Palleni, Dr. Palleni gave Malloy a warning. The same incident happened the next day, again, Philip Malloy is sent to Dr. Palleni’s office. This time Malloy is told that he could apologize, or be suspended, Malloy refused to apologize, so Dr. Palleni is forced to suspend him for two days. After the suspension, a whole ordeal began, including the newspaper, in the local town, and nation- wide, and also radio shows. Many people are to blame for this incident, but I believe that Philip Malloy is the main person of blame, for the facts that he lied multiple times, disrespected his teachers, and passed the blame several times. …show more content…
Narwin is out to get him, that is not the case. “Miss Narwin, English teacher, and she doesn’t like me…”(pg. 84). Ms. Narwin had just given Malloy a shameful grade on a test, that caused his final grade to drop to a D. Malloy tells many lies, including, whether he singing, or is “Just humming”(pg. 35), why he is suspended, and Miss Narwin’s hatred for him. He tells all of these lies to Miss Jennifer Stewart, who is a newspaper reporter, who had the story published. As a result of Malloy’s lies, the public is misinformed, and because of this, a budget is not passed, impacting all the schools, in the Harrison School District. Malloy’s lies also affected Miss Narwin’s career, for she is almost fired, asked to take the remaining year off, is sent hate mail, and is hated by her superintendent and not trusted by her
