On Wednesday August 9th at 8:00pm I attended the theatrical showing of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” directed by Marianne Elliott, playing at the Ahmanson theatre. In the play you see a world through the special eyes of Christopher. Being as smart and sharp as he is, he has absolutely zero social skills and a crippling vulnerability to sensory stimulation. His world is a continuous interaction between him and other peoples meaningless body language, verbal outbreaks and bright lights. The modern set design, a dark digital box of pulsing lasers and projected images and videos, plunges us into his nightmare murder mystery, giving us a small glimpse of what fears someones life may contain. He leaves the comfort of his safe introvert world in order to solve the mystery murder. For Christopher exchanges between him and the outer world are frightening such as riding the subway, being physical with strangers, news smells, is a terrifying experience . His father (played by Gene Gillette), a working class man, does his best for Christopher and clearly has an immense love for his son regardless of all his faults, however Christopher has trouble understanding the hardships his father has to go through in order to care for him and in my own eyes seems to take him for granted. in the mist of being a detective Christopher discovers a box containing letters from his apparently dead mother (played by Felicity Jones Latta), taking him on another quest causing him to give up all of his security and venture outside his house. He relies on the lessons he’s learned from his teacher Siobhan (played by Maria Elena Ramirez), a warm woman who's voice is projected through the mind of Christopher in his times of distress. she ttys to help him cope with reality, calculating prime
