We live in a modern era: one that allows us to learn about and accept personal disabilities and limitations that were previously hidden from the public or even institutionalized. In Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, a fifteen-year old boy named Christopher shares his life with autism. The book leads the reader to believe the main themes revolve around a murder mystery, but as Christopher begins to investigate, he starts to uncover more than he bargained for. Although Christopher believes in acting logically, he struggles to do so in action. So does he actually think logically, how does that affect him socially, and how does that affect his character? He thinks all the choices he initiates should be constructed by his views and beliefs. “I wondered whether I should open the envelope because it was something I had taken from Father’s room. But then I reasoned that it was addressed to me so it belonged to me so it was OK to open it” (Haddon 121). He doesn’t grasp the idea of consequences in his actions, and chooses to think of positives rather than negatives when making decisions. In the quote, he is shown not thinking ahead, which some may classify as an illogical decision. So how does this affect his character? These factors make Christopher alien to his community, in ways mentally and physically. His lack of social skills make him distant to others such as classmates, teachers, and neighbors, yet he will need all of these factors in the future when he must create an adult life of his own. In his diverse mind, Christopher knows he deviates from other people and the society he has grown to live in, but yet he still doesn’t try to change. This shows that he’s confident in his choices and his decisions. Yet logical thinking and organization controls his life, from eating at unfamiliar places to maintaining a daily timed schedule. In conclusion, there are many points whether Christopher’s logical thinking makes up his character. As shown in many different areas of strengths and weaknesses, Christopher’s actions portray that he thinks logically; including how he deals with making illogical decisions, how it affects him socially, and ways that it changes his character. These examples open a new view into the mind of a world we don’t understand ourselves. As a new generation, we have evolved to live with different types of people in the world, as well as leading a life side by side with
