Youths have a heavy reoffending rate. The percentage of reoffending youths is 68% which is a high population of our youths showing we need to make a change. Using circle justice committees young offenders may receive the sentence of banishment. This sentence is used in the book called Toughing Spirit Bear where Cole Mathers a young offender gets banished to an island as his punishment for his actions. This puts him in extremely difficult situations. Having youths banished as a sentence is not what we should be considering. When a youth is banished they would be put into difficult situations which are not safe. Having them in these situations requires the proper mindset which many youths don't have. There are many dangers that come with banishing a youth. Many youths who are banished are put at big risks, they could be put into serious dangerous situations where they may not know how to handle themselves. In the novel Touching Spirit Bear Cole Mathews is banished to an island for assault. While on the island, Cole is very unstable due to his choices he comes in contact with a spirit bear. As a result, Cole is severely injured and almost dies. This shows the dangers of banishing a youth, when a youth is unprepared for these situations they are likely to be harmed or put in situations where they are unable to protect themselves. Having them put into care systems that are semi-isolated is likely to help them improve and work on themselves. Having youths work with people to help them mentally could help with a significant increase in youths being rehabilitated. When they receive care and appreciation for their work there is a significant chance of improvement. When Cole receives Garvey's attention and care he starts to slowly care more. While he is manipulating the circle justice committee he slowly shows signs of guilt at the end before he is taken to the island. This shows that youths can improve when around role models and caring people it just requires time and money. Youths receiving care would help them through their rehabilitation process and improve our youths in our community. Overall youths need to be cared for as that will help them improve the most through our justice
