Dangers of Playing God and Human Cloning
In Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein plays god and it costs him dearly. The cloning of humans would inevitably include controlling of human life, with dangers such as genetic abnormalities, and possible issues with human rights or societal views. When Victor makes his creation, he does not consider possible problems he might be causing for his creation. Victor’s creation suffers for all of the reasons listed to why human cloning can be dangerous. Victor’s creation has similarities to human cloning, the power to play god and control human life should not be left to scientists.
“Cloning is the main process by which a genetically identical copy of a certain bacteria, plant, or animal is produced by asexual reproduction” (Aurelia, 2011). Human cloning is the ability to create a child who shares the exact same genes as the parent (Aurelia, 2011).
If human clones were to be successfully created, they’d likely be controlled by the scientific or medical communities for research. Creating clones for the sole purpose of infecting them with diseases so that medicine can advance quicker is a common theoretical use for human clones, along with creating them for organ or limb transplants (Aurelia, 2011). A current fear is that clones may not have the same human rights as an average human, and “some ethicists fear that the clone’s rights will be broken” (Aurelia, 2011). It is not certain if clones would be classified as strictly human, becoming second-class citizens, and seen as less important than people who are not clones. In Frankenstein, Victor’s creation is mistreated, and not seen as human. The monster struggles with abandonment, isolation, and societal discrimination. People do not see Victor’s creation as human, they fear and reject him from society, and he retaliates
