In "'Unflinching': The Day John Brown was Hanged for His Raid on Harpers Ferry" from Washington Post, Brown explains that John Brown had led a slave revolt in Virginia which had lead to his execution. Brown was an abolitionist who was strongly religious. In this rebellion, Brown and the other slaves had murdered civilians and also raided Harper’s Ferry. On execution day, two of the guards watching him and they wrote letters to their wives about Brown’s last moments alive. He stood on the gallows unfaltering and was hung.

I was impressed when the defense brought up interesting points like how he was mentally unstable and had a rough family life that caused him to commit this crime. The prosecution defended their claim by stressing that he had violated the law and was mentally sane enough to plan out everything.
