The crusades were one of the deadliest conflicts in all of human existence. They also left a huge mark on religion and culture, most notably, the three Abrahamic religions, and modern day Israel. There were also a series of political and military conflicts between the Catholics and the Seljuk Empire, about Jerusalem. There existed a total of eight crusades between Muslim and Christian armies. The Catholic Church, then led by Pope Urban II, ordered armies be mobilized in an attempt to take Jerusalem back from the Seljuk Turks. During the events of the first invasion, and the march to Jerusalem, they took the lives of many people, and even deprived them of their possessions, and any person deemed an enemy to them was a victim of those atrocities. …show more content…

It also seemed clear that most of the Christians participating in the Crusade, didn’t seem to care too much about preaching the Gospel, instead, seeking ways to benefit themselves during the time of the invasion (jewishvirtuallibrary.org). The Crusades were also the cause of theological divide within the Christian community, as a fine addition. The Great Schism resulted, which was basically a theological dispute between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches. It is widely believed that the crusades, in some senses, also inflicted some damage on the Orthodox church as well (thecollector.com). The year the First Crusade was fought, was in the year 1095 AD, during which a siege was launched against Antioch. Finally, in 1098, the Crusaders took control of the city, resulting in the city becoming one of the first colonies in the Near East (JP Mauro, The lasting impact of the Crusades on Jerusalem).
