Bargain Baumer and Slade are always in conflict with each other. This resulted in Slade’s cruelty and prejudice toward Baumer. Although Baumer was the one being picked on he was a man with great intelligence and Slade was cruel and jealous of his accomplishments. Also, Slade had made nothing of his life so he picked on Baumer, but all along Baumer was planning something to hurt Slade. The effect on Slade was his death. Because Baumer was more intelligent than Slade he was able to outsmart him using his clever plan, thereby causing Slade’s death. Baumer was an immigrant who came from Germany when he was sixteen and learned to read a write English. He became successful when he opened a general store because he was a hard worker. People even said, “…that it would have gone under long ago if Mr. Baumer hadn’t been half mule and half beaver. He started the store just two years before and, the way things were, worked himself close to death.” Although Baumer was fair and kind he wasn’t always treated with respect. He knew that he and Slade really didn’t get along so he said, “I think he hate me, that is the thing. He hate me for coming not from this country. I come here, sixteen years old, and learn to read and write, and I make a business, and so I think he hate me.” Baumer was determined to create a foolproof plan to get back at Slade. Baumer hired Slade as his freighter to haul goods many miles by bribing him. He sent one of his workers to the saloon. “Slade was at the saloon, o’ course, and says to hell with Dutchie, but I told him this was an honest-to-God business, like Baumer had told me to, and there was a quart of whiskey right there in the store for him if, he’d come and get it.” Slade never made it back from this Freight Run Alive. Baumer had ordered “Word Alcohol--Deadly Poison” instead of his usual whiskey order. Slade drank it and died because the kegs looked the same, and he couldn’t read the warning label because he was
