History of the American Major Parties Democrats vs. Republicans There are two major parties in America which are known as the Democrats and republicans. Both political parties have been around for more than 200 years and each party has a history of how they were founded. During 1781 and 1801 was the Anti-Federalists vs. Federalists era. During that time, the ratifying of the Constitution was drafted by the framers meeting in convention in Philadelphia in 1787 (Green Papers: History).
The political systems have been dominated by the Republican and Democratic parties for most of its history. Political parties are just teams trying to win. I identify myself as democratic. I feel like this political party has helped middle class people in many ways. One way was how they fought for Medicare.
Roe vs. Wade is the highly publicized Supreme Court ruling that overturned a Texas interpretation of abortion law and made abortion legal in the United States. The Roe v. Wade decision held that a woman, with her doctor, has the right to choose abortion in earlier months of pregnancy without legal restriction, and with restrictions in later months, based on the right to privacy. As a result, all state laws that limited women 's access to abortions during the first trimester of pregnancy were invalidated by this particular case. State laws limiting such access during the second trimester were upheld only when the restrictions were for the purpose of protecting the health of the pregnant woman. Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in the greater United States, which was not legal at all in many states and was limited by law in others.
The Republican and Democratic Parties are both major political parties in the United States; they both have platforms that reflect American conservatism, and are based on community and social responsibilities. The Democratic Party promotes a social liberal, social democratic, and progressive platform. The platforms focus on the individual human rights, and the justice system. Each major political party has their own strengths and weaknesses, and I will only cover a few for example; Democrats believe in decreased spending on the military funding, and this is a strength for the party. With spending less on the military we (the Government) have more money to spend on other things, such as public healthcare.
I personally feel I am more of a Democrat than a Republican. American Politics The two major political parties of the United States are the Democrats and the Republicans. There are also third parties such as the Constitution party, the Green party, the Independent party, and the Libertarian party. The Democratic and the Republican Party constantly compete with each other trying to promote their political ideals and searching the means for maintaining their continuous political leadership.
Before Roe v. wade the number of deaths from illegal abortions was around 5000 and in the 50s and 60s the number of illegal abortions ranged from 200,000 to 1.2 million per year. These illegal abortions pose major health risks to the life of the woman including damage to the bladder, intestines as well as rupturing of the uterus. The choice to become a mother must be given to the woman most importantly because it’s her body, her health, and she will be taking on a great responsibility. A woman’s choice to choose abortion should not be restricted by anyone; there are multiple reasons why abortion will be the more sensible decision for the female.
“On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court announced its decision in Roe v. Wade, a challenge to a Texas statute that made it a crime to perform an abortion unless a woman’s life was at stake. The case had been filed by “Jane Roe,” an unmarried woman who wanted to safely and legally end her pregnancy. Siding with Roe, the court struck down the Texas law. In its ruling, the court recognized for the first time that the constitutional right to privacy “is broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy” (Roe v. Wade, 1973).
The Right to Abortion On January 22, 1973, in a 7-2 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down it’s landmark decision in the case of Roe v. Wade, which recognized that the constitutional right to privacy extends to a woman’s right to make her own personal medical decisions — including the decision to have an abortion without interference from politicians (Planned Parenthood). There are many moments in history when Roe v. Wade has been so close to being overturned, yet it is still in place. Abortion should stay legal, or not overturned, for the health of women everywhere. First, this important case took place at the time of abortion being illegal in most states, including Texas, where Roe v. Wade began.
The Republican and Democrat parties are very different in certain ways. The Republican’s belief is that every person should take care of and or perform his or her role in society, and that the government shouldn’t be involved unless the community can’t reasonably resolve the issue (svgop.com). Democrats on the other hand believe quite the opposite. They believe the government should have more control over the society and provide for the people. One key difference between the republican and democrat parties is how they both look at the economy.
The United States is currently under a two-party system which is the Democrats and the Republicans. Also, the two-party system parties tend to have overlapping coalitions, and programs, both parties must appeal to the Middle of the road voters who provide the margin of victory (Patterson, 2013, p. 197). However, the Democrats and the Republicans are able to win by appealing to the majority of voters during election (Patterson, 2013, p. 198). The goal of each party is to gain the most power to get their candidates voted into office (Patterson, 2013, p. 198). The two-party system also demands that the major parties avoid positions that would allow a considerable amount of distant from the political center (Patterson, 2013, p. 198).
I found out during these quizzes that I most closely relate to the modern whig party but am more on the democratic side of the spectrum. I believe in the democratic view of campaign finance because I think that lobbyists have too much influence in elections. I believe that when when a person is financed by big businesses and people with a lot of money they will not listen to the people as much as their financiers. I agree with the democratic party when it comes to social security. When a person is giving money to the government with the understanding that they will get in back in retirement I believe they should get that money.
They believe that taking away guns will prevent gun violence in America. Democrats support abortion and the women’s right to choose whether or not to keep their baby. The LGBT receives strong support from the Democrats and Democrats lobby for their rights by passing federal laws. Social issues is probably the topic the two parties disagree on the most, but they do agree occasionally. Republican and Democrats are both strong supporters of voters’ rights.
Once part of the Democratic- Republicans, who dominated the government and opposed the Federalist party in the early 1800s, the Democratic party is the oldest political national party in the United States. Democratic-Republicans believed in agrarianism, states’ rights, strictly following the constitution, and a weak federal government. They became the dominant party due to their opposition of ties with Britain and the fall of the Federalist party after the War of 1812. In the presidential election of 1824, disputes over the choice of successor split the party into two factions.
The Green Party took a novel approach to politics. Rather than taking on the occasional social issue, the party was based on the foundation of integrating social movements cohesively into a political party. As such they answered Germany’s call for “an ecological, nonviolent, nonexploitive society” (Spretnak and Capra 3). Much like politics, though, social movements evolve throughout history. In its original state, the Green Party, originating in Germany, integrated social movements with politics in the post-World War II era.
