Two-party systems are where two political parties dominate voting in almost every election, and most of the elected officials are from one of the two parties. They promote centrism, less extremism, and are more stable and easier to govern than multi-party systems (Hershey). However, two-party systems have been criticized for rejecting different views. They don’t promote diverse viewpoints like multi-party systems do. Also, the winner-take-all attitude discourages independent or third party candidates from running for office (Hershey).
Despite being the only major political party the Democrats experienced a lot of conflict among themselves Eventfully a party known as the Whigs developed. Both the Democrats and Whigs wanted to expand the numbers of voters. They accomplished this by eliminating several voting restrictions put on white males. Like the Federalist the Whigs supported northern merchants. Besides supporting merchants, the only thing members of the Whig party really had in common was there opposition to the Democratic party.
American political ideologies are variations on classical liberalism. As a result, these ideologies tend to be very similar. Almost everyone in the United States, for example, believes in limited government, the free market, and individual liberty. With more Moderate Republicans and less Conservative Democrats it makes compromise a lot less likely as there is no middle man to mediate and influence those on the extreme side of their party. Because of this polarization and unwillingness to compromise, Congress is now divided and practically dysfunctional, and it has caused legislative gridlock, and has also undermined the power of the President.
Political parties in the United States are organized through specific factors and mainly categorized through three factors.
