In class there were discussions of multiple differences between human rights versus civil rights. Through the lectures in the course the difference and importance of human rights and civil rights can be acknowledge. After going through the course, in my perspective, we should not prioritize one over the other, but instead have a combination of both? There were many examples of individuals, organizations, and movements that organized in direct or indirect forms of activism. examples of direct and indirect forms of activisms will be provided through the film “The Dream is Now.” Civil rights and human rights may overlap in definition, but there are some differences that allows clarification. The basic human rights can be from having access to clean water, protection from being tortured and even have the right to a fair trial. An example of human rights being violated in the lectures is in, “A Common Goal” on Raza Si, Guerra no by Lorena Oropeza. Plenty of Chicanos were providing their services in Vietnam and others were being disrespected at home. Police aggression was being more frequent and difficult to not notice. This issue caused the August 29th demonstration to end tragically. The L.A County Sheriff’s deputies, joined forces with the city’s police department and went to the park where the Chicano Moratorium Committee: “Our front line is not in Vietnam but in the struggle for social justice in the U.S” had been taken place. They turned the demonstration into a battlefield and ultimately, three people died because of violence. Since human rights are universal all over the globe, this means that all the individuals that were at the demonstration with no intentions of having to fight against police officers and that were beaten for being there. She uses Facebook to ask for online petitions to bring her mother back.
