Ray Bradbury set this story to be on the eve of a battle in the Civil War. The main character, Joby, is portrayed as a young boy who was sent off to be the drummer boy for a Civil War troop going into battle. The war general notices this the night before their next battle and comes to speak to him. “You are the heart of the army.
As the book continues it shows the soldiers experiencing the realities of war. It then goes onto show the soldier's role in their home fronts and the struggle to stay as their former selves. The book’s major point to me was to show these men weren’t just soldiers but ordinary people. For example, the book shows the importance of faith during the war with the soldiers. David W. Rolfs explains that many Northern Christians went off to war but they had no idea the effect it would have on their faith.
That takes place during the American Civil Was, the night before the Battle of Shiloh. While reading this story a lot of questions go through your head. For example, did this really happen? While reading Layli Long Soldier’s Whereas, I was pleasantly surprised with how I liked the literature. Another theme I found that was incorporated into many pieces was land and territory. One of the first poems that caught my attention was “Three”.

The tone of “American Soldier” is determination and proud. He is proud he is an American and will do anything to keep America’s freedom although he gives up a lot along the way. He mentions being a soldier for America does not give him all the money he needs, he never has days off, and if he has to die for our freedom he would gladly do it as he is an American soldier. I would say the message of the “American Soldier” is that everyone needs to make sacrifices to produce what we have now as American citizens and to never give up once you are set on your American Dream. I chose this song because I agree with Toby Keith in that you do not just get what you want, you have to work for it and make sacrifices along the way, but if you are dedicated

I am not a father so I cannot express the love for a child. “My son the Man” is a short 16-line poem. In the poem, Sharon compares her son to Houdini and explains how he has grown up. Sharon expresses deeply about her son growing up and leaving her and it is hard for her to watch her little boy become a man. I can kind of relate to this because my mom still looks at me as if I am a little boy.
