Richard Wrights memoir Black Boy teaches it's readers about how living in the America was set up.most importantly it teaches how badly black people were treated. Wright was mistreated just because he was a young black boy living in the south. In the memoir Black Boy Richard was trying to tell his reader how bad racism was back when he was a kid. Back in the 1900's Wright also used pathos to show how his emotions were toward racism.

There are so many topics I believe that Richard Wright would've talked about today that it is hard to narrow down to just three. If someone told him that we would have a black president in the next century we definitely would have looked at you like you were crazy but if he were here today he would be proud of how much better we have come today. We have improved as a country today for equal rights and treatment of black people but we also still have a long way to go for we are not perfect. For example he would be very ashamed how black people are still getting killed just because of their skin color. He would also be disappointed that blacks are still getting paid less statistically less than whites considering how many jobs Richard had growing up.
In Black Boy, Richard Wright leads a difficult life, yet he is able to persevere through it. Richard has an independent personality that protects him from getting betrayed, but his stubbornness causes him trouble to adapt to a better life. His superior intelligence gives him an advantage over others and makes him think about the future more than others, but they mistreat him for it. Because of his high intelligence, he shares a different moral of equality that makes him stand alone against the whites. The unique personality and beliefs of Richard Wright, like his stubbornness to change, lead to a life of isolation that caused his actions to deviate towards conflict pushing others away.
Richard Wright was born after the Civil War but before the Civil Rights Movement. If Wright were writing an autobiography titled “Black Boy”, today in 2017, about a black boy growing up in the United States, he would write about white people horribly expressing racism against African Americans, the brutality police officers perform on blacks, and the positively protesting movement, Black Lives Matter, which people engage in fighting for the rights of African Americans. During the time period of “Black Boy”, whites were awfully expressing racism towards African Americans. They would discriminate, despise, and violently mistreat them. If Richard Wright would be writing an autobiography about the life of a black boy today in 2017, he would write
(Wright 15) Richard is also seen as not worthy by his father because he's just a boy, with his dad telling him things like “Get out of my eyes before I smack you down”. (Wright 12) Also seen as not worthy by white people since he's black. This resulted in Richard being used by white people for entertainment in bars with Richard saying “I took a sip and coughed, the men and women laughed. The entire crowd in the saloon gathered about me.” (Wright 20)
Given the countless descriptions of events in his life within his writings relating to his experiences compared to other sources going into depth about racial rules and etiquette, it can be concluded that Wright’s personal experiences with racial etiquette was typical, rather than atypical, with those of other African Americans for the time period. In the beginning, Wright describes his very first encounters with racial etiquette placed upon him from an early age, when previously, he had absolutely no experiences in his childhood up until that moment. His first lesson in this he would follow in his lifetime was not taught to him by white people, despite coming being hit in the head with a broken bottle by a white kid. Rather, it was instilled early on by his family, and more specifically, his mother.

I, Frederick Douglass, a former slave and eminent human rights leader in the abolition movement, was the first black citizen to hold a high U.S. government rank. I was born into slavery in Talbot County, Maryland. I ended becoming a famous intellectual and got involved in a large range of causes lecturing thousands about women’s rights, and the abolition movement to name a few. I wasn’t born Frederick Douglass, rather my birth name was Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey. I was one of the first African-American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman, but more than that I wanted to help shape the United States as to where race and color did not matter, where everyone can live together without arguments over issues like these.
Since they do not earn a decent wage, they don’t have the minimum amount of luxury in their lives. They are deprived of homes, food and other essential necessities. The effect of racial discrimination discloses on Wright in the guise of starvation. As a child, Richard could not grasp the concept of racism. But when he grows up, he acknowledges why he and his sibling need to feast upon the leftover sustenance of the white individuals.
In black boy Richard Wright was taught that white people were dominant to minorities, which further diminished any opportunity of succeeding in such a prejudice time period. In doing so he was affected by political, economic and social segregation. His curiosity with the relationship between superiors versus minorities leads to consequences in his community, whether it's his own family, friends, and employers. All of this segregation and racism centers from laws that are called Jim crow laws. Jim crow laws were state and local laws enforcing racial segregation in the southern unites states from 1880 to 1965(a).
Wright had stepped to the side to allow the people to walk past him when his friend, Griggs, “reached for [his] arm and jerked [him] violently, sending [him] stumbling three of four feet across the pavement.” His friend was trying to teach him how to “properly” get out of white peoples ways because when white people are around Richard “acts…as if [he] didn’t know that they were white.” Wright, being a very rebellious child, seemed to stem his rebellion into a tone that whites took as a sign of utter disrespect. This, though, only seemed to be a part of southern ways, as Wright later explains how, in Chicago, some female workers at a small café would rub up against him as they were walking by. If something like this were to happen in the South, even if it was the white woman’s fault, Wright could have been sentenced to death simply because of the color of his
“I was learning rapidly how to watch white people, to observe their every move, every fleeting expression, how to interpret what we said and what we left unsaid” (Wright 181). Richard uses his observation of whites to guide himself on how to act and react around white people. For example he must agree with the whites even if he truly disagrees. The story represents the culmination of Wright’s passionate desire to observe and reflect upon the racist world around him. Racism is so insidious that it prevents Richard from interacting normally, even with the whites who do treat him with a semblance of respect or with fellow blacks. For Richard, the true problem of racism is not simply that it exists, but that its roots in American culture are so deep it is doubtful whether these roots can be destroyed without destroying the culture itself. “It might have been that my tardiness in learning to sense white people as "white" people came from the fact that many of my relatives were "white"-looking people. My grandmother, who was white as any "white" person, had never looked "white" to me” (Wright 23).
The reality of being Black and living in the American South during the era of Jim Crow was terrible. Richard Wright was able to convey this powerful message through his autobiographical essay. Jim Crow forced Blacks to adhere to impossibly high standards around whites and victimized many women.
