Mad Max: Fury Road (George Miller, 2015) is the winner of the 2016 Oscar for Best Film Editing. Editing is undoubtedly one of the most important components in the making of a film or movie. Specifically, the editing of a film’s audio. Audio plays a tremendous role in the film, Mad Max: Fury Road. The alteration of the audio for Mad Max: Fury Road contributes the development of certain characters within the movie. During the opening scene in Max Mad: Fury Road, Max (Tom Hardy) in shown standing alone in a desert environment with his car to the left of him. There is little to no sound or music. The only sound is of his voice narration and the whispers of people in his head. The technique of editing out the sound of the environment means that at that moment, Max has the ability to control his surroundings and what filter out what he wants to hear. The audio at this point of the movie changes drastically from a silent scene to a loud scene as Max turns on his car and drives away. As he is driving away, the sound descends the further he goes into the distance. The use of a descending change in audio means weakness and inferiority. Max is in a world where he is reduced to nothing but a worm in a vast land of emptiness. There is a brief moment of silence after Max has left the scene, then suddenly the warboys catch up to him. The sound becomes increasingly louder when the warboys appear into the scene. The use of a ascending change in audio means power, dominance, and control. The warboys have power over the situation and soon captures and takes control of
