The article, “The Eerie World of Reunited Twins,” presents research on identical and fraternal twins; it addresses the issue of nature vs nurture, and tries to measure the extent at which our genes influence and determine who we are. This article is important and beneficial for science and the public because it explains the controversy of nature vs nurture. In the article, researcher Lykken insists that the very concept of nature vs nurture is artificial because the two are totally interdependent, as he quoted “Nature via Nurture.” The influence of the environment indeed determines our personalities. Some psychological pressures could be the answer, such as the pressure found in many families where only the achievements of one child are noticed (or preferred), or where more attention is given to one specific child. The most interesting part was the study about sexual orientation among monozygotic and dizygotic twins. This could mark the next steps for further research on this subject. Many people have the popular belief that “People chooses to be gay” which is influence by religion, lack of knowledge, or simply lack of acceptance to something as they called it “unnatural.” But many studies have shown that there is a biological foundation for homosexuality predisposing individuals to have certain sexual preference. Further research on the LGBT community is needed to help this community on their journey for acceptance. The study on monozygotic twins’ sexual preferences is important because this shows us that even individuals who show 100% similarity in their genome can be different and even have different sexual preferences. The question of what makes a person gay/lesbian/transgender is still not answer. There is bias and different case
