There is a sense of optimism about the Dominican Republic’s energy potential. The country is not only underway to meet its domestic needs, but it also has the potential to meet regional ones by becoming an energy hub. The Electricity Pact is the next step towards a comprehensive solution to the problem of the inefficient energy use.
Daily blackouts, costly subsidies and overly-extended connection periods are not only a hard-to-bear burden for the Dominican people, but also for the country’s global competitiveness. An efficiently run electricity sector does not only result in a strong macroeconomic performance, but in a promising future. Minister of Energy and Mines, Antonio Isa Conde, told TBY that there is still a lot to be done in this fight and emphasized that one of the main challenges for this country’s development is the efficient use of energy. As crucial as it is for society, the Electric Pact is also very symbolic as it will dictate what the energy sector will be like in the years to come. For a period of approximately 13 years, this collective and sustainable vision will allow the Dominican Republic to head towards common objectives in a consensual manner. The Ministry of Energy and Mines attempts to reduce energy consumption by 13.2% by year 2030. If this plan were implemented to industries, businesses, tourism establishments and households, a 10% savings in consumption would be achieved. However, Minister Isa Conde assured that it has been difficult to reach an agreement between all sectors involved in the pact because of interests, politics and individualism.
