In Kevin Fedarko’s novel The Emerald Mile Kenton Grua lived a life that would be remembered for years to come. He blazed his own trail and did what he wanted to do. Likewise, I would love to be remembered for my time here at Utah State. This is a big new step in the lives of freshmen on campus and, like Kenton floating the river for the first time, it can be frightening venturing into the unknown. If we get involved with the university and get to know people, we will be much better off. Fedarko explains that Grua “wanted to know and experience the canyon in its entirety”. He was a highly trained river rat. He knew the river like the back of his hand and if there was ever an emergency that needed any kind of expertise, he was the man for the job. Achieving a higher level of education will enable us to, first and foremost get an enjoyable career that suits our personality just like Grua when he got his job as a river rat at 18. Also education teaches us how to approach potential issues down the road. We will be more acquainted with the real world and how it works by going to college and learning as much as we can.

3. Explain how the Big Ideas of Connections relate to both a path to a well lived life, and to successful completion of higher education.
Connections is getting us started on our great path to a fulfilling career, meeting new people, and much more. Getting out of our comfort zone is a great thing to do and connections helps us do that. We will be more acquainted with the campus. William and his team were destined to break the speed record on a dory but to do so, they would have to “…row through some of the biggest rapids at night-something that had never before been tried” (169). As we come to the university and make new friends and have new experiences we will have to try new things that we have never done before. It may be intimidating going to class for the first time or doing your first big project but as for William and his team, it will pay off in the end and it will all be worth
