Coming of age is define to be when one emerges from the innocence of childhood into the maturity of adulthood. The first element of coming of age is experiencing love, and a character who goes through this would be Hazel from “The Fault in Our Stars”. Another element would be developing empathy and a character that’s associated with this is Mr. Woo from “Buck Boy”. At the beginning of the book, Hazel seems to be like a hopeless teenager who has prepared herself in case she dies. Later on, she meets a boy named Gus and the two of them seem to have some sort of interest. Throughout the book, Hazel is in denial that she is in love with this guy she just met. She often would deny Gus’s love because she was afraid of what would happen after she dies.“I fell in love like you would fall asleep: slowly and then all at once.” Here Hazel is expressing her feelings for Gus, even though she hid her feelings for a while. Gus reassures her that he would love her no matter what and even if that means if either one of them dies. Woo is introduce, and a little later he shoots someone because he was being robbed. People begin to blame Mr. Woo for shooting Buckboy because he wasn’t white. “When I saw Mr. Woo standing by himself on a little hillside with his yellow straw hat in his hand, I pointed and told Rev. Jenkins that’s where Buckboy is buried. And that’s where he was.” Here Mr. Woo is showing empathy for Buckboy even though he was a bad person. Arguments start to spout from different places and conflicts arise. On the day of the Buckboy’s funeral was when Mr. Woo decided to buy the suit and casket.
