Kelly Nash November 4, 2014 Professor Lindsey Cantwell Anne Moody and her Journey Towards Equality The memoir, Coming of Age, written by author Anne Moody, was composed with the intention of exposing the racial discrimination and prejudice that Moody had experienced as she grew up on a plantation. Moody grew up as an African American girl who was introduced to racism at a young age, and this along with her gender, socioeconomic status, religion, and education level had a significant impact on her life and how she viewed society. Moody was an active member of a civil rights movement coordinator, after the lynching of Emmett Till. Till was convicted of talking to a white woman in a supermarket.
“Where is it written” by Adam Schwartz, is a story about a boy named Sam who doesn’t want to live with his mom anymore. Sam first tells his dad to sue his mom for custody of him. Then Sam goes to live with his mom and all they did was argue. Finally Sam ends up going to live with his father. Coming of age is an important theme in which the protagonist goes from being a child to an adult and awakening to a new understanding of his or herself and the world around him or her.

Coming of age can be described as the time in one's life when one matures emotionally, physically, and mentally. This usually happens in the teenage years of one's life. The two most important components of coming of age are experiencing love for the first time, and finding one's identity.
Dave Sanderson is a teenager soon to become a man, not treated with much respect Dave decides he needs to prove his self to his fellow coworkers, boss, and parents that he is in fact grown, and he has a plan on exactly how to achieve this task. 'The coming of age ' a major theme in this story, for Dave is a phase that every individual has to experience. He is eager to grow up and gain respect, which we all were too. What is coming of age, you may ask? Coming of age is basically growing up and into adulthood. It’s that point in life when you have character building experiences that will change you forever. Two important elements relevant in the process of coming of age and forming your own identity are parents and loss. The book that I chose to read in Q4 was “A Secret Life of Bees” by Sue Monk Kidd.

Coming of Age in Mississippi by Anne Moody tells the sympatric story of how Essie Mae and her family overcome the obstacles that they are forced to deal with and problems that come with trying to break through racism. The first four chapters of this story tell us about Essie’s mother, who happens to be a young parent and her struggle to provide for her children, and how when Essie grows older she is forced to take on the role of being a mother to her siblings as well as to her actual mother. Despite these hardships however her strong work ethic and enjoyment of learning give her the strength to help her get through it all day after day. This signifies the growth and transformation from a child to an adult. Loss and love are two major coming-of-age components that play substantial roles in the journey of youth. In the novel The Fault in Our Stars written by John Green, the narrator Hazel Grace experiences a heartbreaking loss that changes her completely. In the play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, Juliet explores her feelings of love and desire for her one and only Romeo.

This stage of life is characterized by many changes, including physical and emotional growth, as well as a period of maturing. In William Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet, age is a prevalent theme. Shakespeare introduces two feuding families, the Capulets, and the Montagues, who have continually fought with each other. Their two children, Romeo, a Montague, and Juliet, a Capulet, meet at a masked party and fall madly in love.

Whether it is a loss of a close friend or a small acquaintance, friendships come and go, which is a key moment in the coming of age moment. The loss of friendships is shown in the two texts Ortiz Cofer’s, “American History” and Jessica McBirney’s, “Growing Up Key Moments.” Experiencing the loss of a friend is part of the coming of age process because it allows people to learn valuable lessons and to mature.
Coming of age means that a person has matured and taken steps toward adulthood. Coming of age shows independence and growth in an individual. Being brave and courageous are also characteristics of someone who has come of age. This is a common theme between the The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane and screenwriter John Houston and “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” by Frederick Douglass. The idea of coming of age is presented when Henry and Frederick Douglass both gain mental maturity, and again when Henry physically comes of age.
What does “coming of age” mean? For most it means moving from childhood immaturity to adulthood maturity. Additionally, “coming of age” can signify that a boy or girl is mature enough to understand his or her responsibility towards society and family. In the short story “The Man Who Was Almost a Man,” Richard Wright tells about a boy named Dave Saunders that thinks he is “of age” when in reality he is not. As the title suggests, Dave is between boyhood and adulthood.
In the article Growing up, a thirteen year old boys learns some important life lessons and matures. He matures because he came of age in the article. The main character started coming of age when he started lying to everyone just so he could get want he wanted. This new found skill in lying got him in a lot of trouble when his parents found out, and made him lie even more. I think he finally came of age when he understood that his parents were trying to help him and not hinder him, and when he realised lying isn’t the best option.
