What is a feminism? I have always thought feminism, or being a feminist, is about women standing up for their rights and claiming equality. I have never thought much about this topic. In class, we discussed feminist theory, which aims to develop strategies for societal change by understanding and addressing everyday sexism. It provides a systematic approach to comprehending crucial feminist concepts and practical methods for resisting and eradicating sexist influence. To be willing to cause unhappiness might be about how we live an individual life" (Ahmed, 2012, p. 2), meaning challenging societal norms can cause unhappiness but is essential for a fair society. My experience was being a youth leader for my church at the age of 19. As a girl and the youngest in our community youth group, men also dominated; I was seen as intimidating and stepping out of line. In my Tongan culture, it is the role of a man to rule and a woman to be obedient and follow. The challenges I faced were ridicule from elders, disapproval from women within our group, mockery from men, and embarrassment from my partners. Yes, the journey was challenging, but I was determined to establish greatness for myself and every woman who faced the same ridicule. In the end, my work was noticed by parish priests and leaders from other communities, which soon led to the empowerment of more women joining the Youth Group and giving them equal voices as men. The story's moral is that facing social norms will be challenging and emotionally and mentally distressing, but who will if we don't stand up for our rights?
