Feminism is a word that has caused lots of controversy in our society. Some say that feminism is unnecessary and hateful towards men. However, Merriam Webster defines feminism as “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes” (Merriam Webster). Feminism isn’t about hating men, it’s about empowering women. As a group of people who have experienced discrimination, rape/rape culture, and hate for hundreds of years , women have the right to fight for equality. Feminists are often viewed as men hating and dramatic when it’s not the case at all. According to a study done by Stop Street Harassment, an organization dedicated to ending sexual harassment on the streets, about 65% of women have been sexually harassed in their lifetime (StopStreetHarassment.org). This goes to show that feminism is very much needed in today’s society. Women have experienced discrimination for thousands of years. It isn’t rare for a woman to experience catcalling while walking down the street. It isn’t news when someone calls out something crude to a woman just trying to travel to her next destination. Feminist.com, a feminist organization, says, “Sexual harassment is any unwanted sexual attention a woman experiences. It includes leering, pinching, patting, repeated comments, subtle suggestions of a sexual nature, and pressure for dates,” (feminist.com). The majority of women report having been sexually harassed before. “According to the U.S. Department of Labor, some 50 to 80% of women in the U.S. experience some form of sexual harassment during their academic or work lives,” (feminist.com). Sexual harassment in the workplace is not okay. Women should not fear being distracted from their work due to crude comments made by another.
