Change Throughout The Progressive Era Although Henry Ford did not invent the world’s first automobile, he managed to create a new popular market at the start of the 20th century. The Ford Motor Company, established in 1905, introduced the Model T car in 1909. A total of 15 million cars had been sold by mid-1927, the year they were discontinued in order to introduce the new later version. The Model T was so successful mainly because it appealed to the mass market; the cars were both reliable, and easy to maintain (Ford Motor Company). At first, production was slow and only wealthy families were able to afford these automobiles; however, this all changed in 1913 when the assembly line was introduced.

Headed by William K. L. Dickson, Edison and his team of researchers, known as “muckers”, built the Strip Kinetograph in 1889 (National Park Service). It was a very early form of the motion picture camera which took individual pictures fast enough so that, when played together, the images seemed to move. Edison also assisted in building the Kinetoscope, which allowed a single person to see the short film through a “peep hole” (Edison Innovation Foundation); these two inventions would birth the film industry that still thrives today. At the start of the 20th century the two main groups that represented the women’s suffrage movement—which had begun in 1848—included the NAWSA (National American Women Suffrage Association) and the NWP (National Women’s Party). Another group, advocating for alcohol’s prohibition, was the WCTU (Women’s Christian Temperance Union); founded in 1874, it came to be “the most powerful women’s organization in the 19th century” (The National Women's History Museum).
