Multiculturalism is the presence of several different cultures within a particular society. The four different constitutional bases of multiculturalism are: federalism, religious freedom, free speech and economic liberty, and parental rights. Federalism basically means that peoples “Should be able to retain their cultures, including the legal rules that flow from those cultures” (Volokh). Federalism protects the citizens in the sense that they should be able to retain their cultural values. Second, religious freedom is a constitutional base of multiculturalism as it provides “a country with a considerable range of religious views and religious cultures” (Volokh). Religious freedom allows numerous cultures to form in a society without the fear of prejudice. Third, free speech and economic liberty are also constitutional bases of multiculturalism …show more content…

First, the idea of multiple cultures in America has “Often let people live, be free, and pursue happiness in America without having to sacrifice or hide their belief systems” (Volokh). People are able to be happy as they do not have to hide who they truly are. Second, multiculturalism allows society to form new and distinct ideologies. With religious and cultural diversity, the country is known as a “marketplace of ideas” (Volokh). Next, multiculturalism helps benefit the country as a whole. With the “Tolerance for a wide range of religious belief systems,” more people from around the world are drawn to the United States (Volokh). Along with these people, they bring new ideas and perspectives that improve the country. Lastly, multiculturalism improves the nations’ knowledge about other nations and their cultures. With several distinct cultures in a nation, citizens are able to get “more familiar with people of other cultures” (Volokh).
