The life of someone who practices Judaism cannot be assumed because there are so many differences between each type of Judaism. There is both segregationist Judaism and integrationist Judaism, and even within those two there are different groups. But, integrationist and segregationists are the two big differences within Judaism. There are some major key differences between segregationist Judaism and integrationist Judaism. When it comes to segregationists they are often considered either Hasidic or Yeshiva.
As previously stated, Judaism is a very popular religion despite their “recent” catastrophe. Judaism was founded by Abraham in 1300 B.C. Which puts them at around 3000 years old. That’s very old, but still younger than the idea of hinduism which is said to be “timeless”. In Jewish temples known as synagogues and even in homes, Jews worship a book called the Torah.
The Reform Jews primarily focus on the moral measurements of the faith instead of the old-style services, commandments and practices. Reform Jews moved the Sabbath day from Saturday to Sundays. The reform Jews often read the scriptures in the of their choice language instead of the native tongue of Hebrew. In addition they set aside the “kosher” dietary rules and their noticeable ways of dress, and their choice of circumcision as well. The guide these reform Jews follow is one of self-guiding.
Jewish people did not go to church, instead they went to temples. There were two main laws that jewish people had to follow. There were five major key points that went with the two very important two laws. The Jewish laws had a lot to do with the Holocaust for example the laws made the city work differently. On special occasions they used to sing sacred songs.
The many difference between the Reform and Orthodox Jew is the way they look at the Torah and the how they approach it. The Orthodox Jews believe that the Torah comes straight from God and can never be altered or changed no matter what. Jews basically follow it as law and the only people that are capable of interpreting it are the rabbi’s. Now the Reform Jew they believe that the Torah is something that God wrote as a guide to life and their relationship with God.
This makes practicing Judaism much easier than before which is exactly what the Reform movement wanted. They wanted to attract as many Jews as possible and by making the religion easier to follow, they can do so. This is a enormous change. When the Pittsburg Platform stated that certain Rabbinic laws were
Judaism promoted the separation between religion and state “since it has enabled them to guarantee their legal rights and their civic freedoms.” (Arkush 647). In order to integrate into the non-Jewish world Judaism adopted acculturation; Judaism learned to adopt and implement the ideas, values, and behaviour of non-Jews. Zionism was another response to the anti-Semitism created. Zionism is one of the first post-modern religious movements of the Jewish people (Neusner 160), after World War II Jews would not want to return to Europe following the murders that took place (Neusner 160) so they generated the goal to create a Jewish national state in Palestine.
In the early to mid-nineteenth century, major cultural movements took place in the United States. New religious movements can be linked to reform movements. Religious changes focused on family life. They also liberated the lives and freedom of women. Reformers were more concerned about controlling society.
The Jews have always been a persecuted minority, especially in the Medieval Europe. Judaism had a small amount of followers, as they did not force people to convert, but it was still an important religion, for it provided the foundation on which Christianity and Islam were both formed. Their holy book was called the Talmud or the Torah. After the Jewish diaspora, Jews fled to either the Middle East, Africa, or Europe. Anti-semitism was always a major issue in Europe at the time, and many countries exiled Jews in the Middle Ages.
One of their sacred text is the Jewish Bible. They have a lot of practices and holy days there holy day is Saturday there main holiday is Hanukkah. Judaism
Other differences are that Catholic Church gives great attention to Holly Mother where in Eastern orthodox she is known as a saint but is not idolized as much as Catholics do. They pay much more attention to holy trinity between Holy Father, Son and holly spirit. To symbolize that, when making cross sign during prayer they do it with 3 fingers, Catholics with full hand. Greeting close friend and family, in traditional they kiss 3 times in the cheek. Orthodox Church doesn’t recognize Pope or centralized type of hierarchy like Catholics do.
In conclusion, it is evident that although both of these denominations are a part of Judaism, there are many differences between them. Overall, one of the main differences between Orthodox Jews and Reform Jews is Reform Jews focus more on the ethics and moral of Judaism compared to the Orthodox who focus on strict rituals, commandments, and practices. Neither form of Judaism is better than another, they are simply meant for different people. Judaism is a religion filled with a variety of different beliefs and interpretations, but it is still a very popular belief system that is recognized
