Rationale for additional support
The children in “The Gingerbread Man” (Open University, 2017) have similar needs. All the students featured have English as an additional language. This means for them to participate in the school environment their English level needs to increase to that of their peers. The staff that work with the children featured in “The Gingerbread Man” (Open University, 2017) support the children and remove the barriers to their learning in a variety of ways. The first way they do this is in the teaching assistant’s specialist ability to speak the children’s mother tongue. This will make the children feel at ease and know they have a way to express themselves, even if it is not in English.

In “The Gingerbread Man” (Open University, 2017) we see the teaching assistant first reading the story with the children in a fun and interactive way. Her tone of voice and non verbal communications such as moving her arms involve the children in the story. When she uses her hand to indicate stop you hear the young girl say stop, this shows that she understands the story but has a smaller vocabulary than most children in her year group. This funding helps with extra materials, translators and other educational items to help a child with EAL. This extra funding helps children from another country who come to the UK become efficient in English and get a stellar education regardless of their background or parental
