The Giver Analytical Essay

The outstanding novel “The Giver” written brilliantly by Lois Lowery is a book about a young boy who lives in a dystopian society. The boy, Jonas, is selected to be the next Receiver of Memory for his job assignment. The giver, the old Receiver of Memory, has to train Jonas for his assignment, by giving him memories. Along with these memories come emotions Jonas never even knew were a thing. Some of the emotions were anguish, love, and happiness. The memory of sunshine introduces the emotion of anguish to Jonas. In the book, Lowery writes “His skin began to sting. Restlessly, he moved one arm, bending it, and felt a sharp pain in the crease of his inner arm at the elbow. “Ouch,” he said loudly and shifted to the bed.” (109). This evidence shows

Jonas repeated it to me. “Love.” It was a word and a concept new to him.” (Lowery 157). This proves that Jonas had never experienced this feeling, so it was a little bit harder for him to grasp the word. It also shows Jonas what real human emotions are, with a life of sameness, which plays an important role in this novel. Lastly, one way Jonas experienced happiness is in the memory of snow. The author writes, “Comprehending all of these things as he sped downward, he was free to enjoy the breathless glee that overwhelmed him; the speed, the clear cold air, the total silence, the feeling of balance and excitement and peace.” (Lowery 103). This quote shows that the author introduces new and important emotions through memories. It also provides support that the author believes happiness is an important emotion. In conclusion, the author, Lois Lowery, introduces important emotions through memories. Jonas learns a lot about life without the sameness through these emotions. All of these emotions and memories play an important role in advancing the plot
