Jonas in the novel “The Giver” goes throughout changes as a character after becoming the receiver of memory in the community. He goes from being oblivious to the past like everyone else in the community, to becoming mature in his knowledge. There are three points on how Jonas changed drastically as a person. For being a young man and being oblivious to all these memories and thoughts, to literally them being transferred to you from a man in quick time can drastically change you and make a person have a different look at things. He realized that the community is truly clueless. He realized at first when he begins to get the memories and he begins to see color. He tried to show his friends in ways to see the color, but they didn’t see what he did. Another way of showing the community is clueless is by memories in general. The community can’t have feelings about others either. They have to take a shot to control their feelings. They are also brainwashed of memories as well such as war and death. The receiver of memory takes in all these memories for the people so they aren’t having to know these things. Another way the community is clueless is by how they have no idea release really means death. Release is usually celebrated for the old at the House of Old as they go to “elsewhere”, but really they get a lethal injection and then dies. The community is so clueless that the nurses performing the release don’t realize they are committing a murder and then throwing away a body.
