Then Jonas watches as his father gives the baby a needle into a vein in his forehead. The needle is a lethal injection which kills the baby. Jonas is shocked when he sees this. Here, it gives a clear example of the society's attitude towards death and what they view release as. They see release as a peaceful death with a ceremony celebrating that person's life, rather than losing a precious life.

I think Jonas and Gabriel died. When I read the sentences about Jonas found a sled and went down the hills, I thought that’s not possible if someone just goes up the hill and finds a sled. I think what Jonas saw at the end of the book is not real, someone could see something that is not real when he/ she was really hungry and cold. When Jonas was going up the hill, he was really hungry, he didn’t eat anything through the past few days.
I could imagine that it would be hard to let them go, but happy for them to end their suffering. This is why I think that euthanasia is compassionate and humane. The community that Jonas lives in does accept the practice of euthanasia, but in a different way than we do in the real world. Jonas felt anger for his father and the pain he feels for the baby twin. On page 168 in the giver,Jonas realized that they been playing a game of war ( Lowry). Jonas feel sad and misunderstood for the boy in war. Jonas sadly understood that no one know what he is feeling. These are like real life because some careless people don 't think about others and think that everything is just a joke.
People in the “community” don’t know that after their injected. For example, on page 150 - 151, when his father injected a clear liquid into the newborn twin in his veins or in this case, his head because it was the only vein they could see so he could get released. He was released or dead. His father doesn't know this so he acts really silent as if the twin is sleeping and not to be disrupted after Jonas freaks out about how his father killed the baby and was asking about why he would do this. “They can’t help it, Jonas, they know nothing!”
Throughout the Community, in The Giver, the subject of release can have a positive or negative effect on this utopian Community. Release is a form of punishment in the Community, and is also used to kill the old or to kill the smallest of identical twins. Something positive that can come from this awful thing is that they portray release as a celebration. They hold a celebration for the old where they celebrate all those in the House of the Old that were recently released. This could also take away the pain and suffering for those people who are suffering.
The Giver is a well known book that has won the Newbery award for its great and teeth grinding plot, yet has been under questioning in the past for its content like the topic of release to else were. for example when a child is released it is sad, but when someone older but still has their life a head is released it is a disgrace and the name is never used again. Then when an elder is released it is celebrated but then leaves you with a question what is release.
