What major conflicts do you face in life? Clearly Lois Lowry faces many conflicts in her story “The Giver”. The Giver is about a boy named Jonas who lives in a failed utopian society. Everything is chosen for everyone, the citizens feel no feelings, and there is no detail in nature like plants and animals. When Jonas turned 12, he was chosen to be the Receiver of Memories about how the world used to be from the previous receiver, The Giver. Jonas and The Giver later form a plan to make the world how it used to be, and return the memories. The major conflicts in Jonas’ journey were self, society, and nature, and these conflicts helped build the overall solution.
Starting off, man vs self was a major conflict. Jonas had to battle with himself in the story when he decided whether or not he should leave Gabriel to be kille md, or take him with him on his journey to bring memories back to his community. In chapter 21, it said “He had hesitated for a moment, standing beside the bikeport in the darkness, not wanting anything of his fathers’ , and uncertain …show more content…

Jonas had to battle many weather obstacles in his journey with Gabriel to a new community. “His consciousness grasped at a wisp of another warm memory, and tried desperately to hold it there, and pass it to Gabriel. His spirits and strength lifted with the momentary warmth and he stood.” Jonas and Gabriel, who were slowly freezing to death, had to use a memory of heat to warm them up.
The last major conflict was society. Jonas strongly disagreed by the way his friends understood war and death.”One of the children raised an imaginary rifle and made an attempt to destroy him with a firing noise. “Pshheeww!” Then they were all silent, standing awkwardly, and the only sound was Jonas’ shuddering breaths. He was struggling not to cry.” You can see from this that now that Jonas knew what death and warfare was, he no longer thought it was a good thing to play
