In Lois Lowry's novel the giver, the main theme is that some people have to make choices.

Jonas shows the importance of choices in this book when he leaves to help Gabe. In the following scene, Jonas left the society. “That night Jonas was forced to flee. He left the dwelling shortly after the sky became dark and the community still (pg.163).” This is a tough choice to make because he left all he ever knew and it was where he grew up. Jonas takes Gabriel and leaves the society so that the memories he had would go to the people in the society. The choice to take Gabe with him is connected to love.

Jonas shows the importance of love when he cares for Gabe. Love is a choice because he could have just left Gabe there, but he cared for Gabe. In this scene, Jonas is transmitting a memory of the sun to Gabriel because it is snowing and it is cold. “He pressed his hands to Gabriel's back and tried to remember sunshine. For a moment it seemed that nothing came to him, that his power was completely gone. Then it flickered suddenly, and he felt tiny tongues of heat begin to creep across and into his frozen feet and legs(175-176).” This shows how he makes the choice to give the memory to Gabriel and not himself. This is a choice because he could have told his mom his dreams. In this scene, Jonas is asked if he had any dreams during the night and he said no. “You slept soundly, Jonas? His mother asked at the morning meal. No dreams? Jonas simply smiled and nodded, not ready to lie, not willing to tell the truth(88).” This is loyalty because, in the receiver’s rules, it said that he can not tell his dreams to anyone so if it is a bad dream they won’t remember it.
