Lea Vilna Santos Mrs. English, 7th September 1st, 2015 The Giver, by: Lois Lowry Log Entry 4: Chapters 7-8: Question 2: In chapters 7 and 8, Jonas is assigned the job of Receiver of Memory and although the Chief Elder calls it the greatest honor,it might give him more hardship and pain than fortune. She explains that the selection is rare and his role is very important because there is only one Receiver and it takes integrity, intelligence, courage, wisdom, and the capacity to see beyond to be that person. At first he wants to tell he has no idea what she means and that he doesn’t have it until he notices a change in the crowd that was quick but he knows that he isn’t dreaming because it’s happened before but to his apple. This quote here is very important to understanding the character that helps the whole journey for Jonas to fall into place. It helps the readers know who the character is, but eventually, this character, the Giver, is very important to the story and without him, the story wouldn’t
Many young adults feel like life's not fair, and dream about stepping up and being the hero, so they can relate to the book . Jonas, the main character, the receiver, feels like this also. He starts to feel this way when he started getting the memories from the Giver. The receiver feels passionate towards people to have emotions. Many teenagers fight for what they believe in, and can relate to Jonas.
Have you ever wondered if there could possibly be a community where no one has any idea of normal everyday things? Well then the Giver is just one example. The Giver has a long history, and it all started with Lois Lowry’s dad and how he forgot his memory of any bad thing and Lois Lowry started thinking what a Community would be like without any painful memories and she came up with The Giver. The Giver revolves around a young boy named Jonas who was chosen to be the new Receiver of Memory which is the highest honor in his community. While Jonas is training he gets all of the memories that everyone else in the community has and then starts to think why can’t other people have these memories he then comes up with a plan to escape the community
All in all, The Giver portrays the theme of tradition through a generation old profession, Jonas’ job of the receiver.
“’She skipped me,’ Jonas thought sunned” (57). Jonas didn’t know why, but the Chief Elder had skipped him and he was so embarrassed. Little did he know however, that his journey as a hero was about to begin. Jonas must walk through pain and danger. He must rely on support from the Giver and he must become mature, in order to complete his journey to heroism.
The Giver looked down at him, his face contorted with suffering. ‘Please’ he gasped, take some of the pain.” (Lowry 149). This excerpt shows that even an assured brave man like the Giver suffers greatly when forced to bear a weight this colossal alone. Jonas is the one person that the Givers trusts and confides in, the one person that he uses to lean on in these kinds of times.

Feelings and Emotion Different feelings and emotion are not known in the community within the people. The Giver and Jonas are the only true people that know how to feel the different emotions. Every night at the conclusion of their evening meal one of the rituals is the evening telling of feelings. In the very first Chapter Jonas talks about how it was almost December and Jonas was beginning to be frightened. But then thought that was the wrong word to use.
When Jonas leaves the community he accomplishes going to a place with warmth, love, color. Jonas hopes that by leaving the community he is breaking the tradition of the Giver and the Receiver bearing all the memories. .Jonas changes throughout The Giver and as a result, tries to change the community. Jonas is a 12 year old boy with no emotions or feelings.
Imagine how society will become in the future. Have you ever realized or witnessed how society,politics,our community has changed in general over the years? Lois Loweryś THE GIVER takes place in a dystopian society where there is no choice,no mistakes,no emotions. Whereas modern-day society we make mistakes, choose our own routes, and are full of all kinds of mixed emotions.
The Giver Literature essay I have read the dystopian novel “The Giver” (1993) which is written by the beloved American author Lois Lowry. “The Giver” is about a twelve-year-old boy with the name Jonas. Jonas lives a similar life as all the others in the community, until the Ceremony of Twelve when he got assigned the task as the Receiver of Memory. As The Receiver of Memory it is Jonas’ task to keep all the memories of the past so not everyone needs to keep this burden. Although Jonas received beautiful memories with a lot of colors and happiness he also felt grief, pain and anger.
“Even the Matching of Spouses was given such a weighty consideration that sometimes an adult who applied to receive a spouse waited months or even years before a Match was approved and announced” (Lowry 48). In the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry, there is a community where there is almost no decision or say in any situations, you wake up tomorrow, and it is the same as yesturday. Nothing is ever unique or different, it’s always the same. Every choice is made for them, every move the make being decided for them. This is how it was in the community, everything was the same always.
In the book,everyone has the same attribute’s but one twelve year old boy named Jonas. Throughout the novel,Jonas has suffer and has been misunderstood. Jonas opened his eyes to the reality of the community. This causes tears,anger,lonely’s,confused,unaware and misunderstanding. “He killed it my father killed it”,Jonas said to himself” (Lowry 188).
In Jonas’s society memories are held by one person, The Giver. The Giver is selected by The Committee of Elders after being observed very closely; The Giver is the one who holds all the pain so the people of the community don't have to feel them. According to the novel, the narrator states, “‘Jonas was identified as a possible Receiver many years ago. We have observed him meticulously. There were no dreams of uncertainty”’(Lowry 62).
