Yuri Kochiyama is a Japanese-American civil rights activist, and author of “Then Came the War” in which she describes her experience in the detention camps while the war goes on. December 7th, is when Kochiyama life began to change from having the bombing in Pearl Harbor to having her father taken away by the FBI. All fishing men who were close to the coast were arrested and sent into detention camps that were located in Montana, New Mexico and South Dakota. Kochiyama’s father had just gotten out of surgery before he was arrested and from all the movement he’d been doing, he begun to get sick. Close to seeing death actually, until the authorities finally let him be hospitalized.
The book The Best War Ever, by Michael C. C. Adams, is about World War II, the events that led up to the war, and the years following the war. Adams starts the book off explaining some myths that people have about the war. The biggest myth associated with the war is that it was the best war ever. Adams then spends the rest of the book talking about why this may or may not be true. In the following chapters, Adams explains the events that led to the war and the events that accorded during World War II.
In chapter one of What They Fought For, I learned about the letters and diaries of the Confederate soldiers. The themes of the letters were home-sickness, lack of peace, and the defense of home against their invading enemy. The thought of soldiers fighting for their homes and being threatened by invaders, made them stronger when facing adversity. Many men expressed that they would rather die fighting for a cause, than dying without trying and this commitment showed patriotism. Throughout the letters, soldiers claimed their reason for fighting, was for the principles of Constitutional liberty and self-government.
Jill Lepore used quotes and images from English colonists and portraits to show how colonists wrote about their experiences during King Philip’s War and how the narrative of the war has changed throughout the centuries. It also sets how colonists will narrate wars for future centuries. She spoked about how their writings of the war had a consequence of temporally silencing the Native Americans version on the war and how people have forgotten or even have any knowledge of the war. She uses a Boston merchant, Nathaniel Saltonstall account tilted “A true but brief account of our losses since this cruel and mischievous war begun” written in July 1676 year after the war had begun. He lists towns such as Narragansett, Warwick, Seekonk and Springfield
Not letting your child go to college is not letting them have a chance to have a life. This relates to a girl named Heather and her father in the The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt. Heather was in a business with her father that she was forced to work in. When her family and her were sitting at the dinner table, she was talking about how she was going to college and her dad interrupted her saying that she’s not going to college and she is perfectly fine in the business that she is in not going anywhere. I don’t think that Heather’s dad has good attitude towards her.
The Allied victory in 1945 was not a sure thing. In early 1942, Germany controlled most of continental Europe and its resources. The Third Reich was in full expansion. The Soviet Union was in vast part occupied, and was risking the annihilation. The United States were not adequately armed for war.

Holling Hoodhood is the only person in Miss. Baker's class doesn't go to a religious school on Wednesday afternoon, so instead, he has to spend his time with Miss. The book Defying Empire Trading with the Enemy in Colonial New York, by Thomas M. Truxes, discusses New York merchants’ continued trade with France throughout the Seven Years’ War (1756-63) despite it being illegal. Truxes maintains that the merchants were imaginative and audacious while remaining loyal to their country. The impacts of the war were globally felt and had legal, maritime, and personal disparities. According to Truxes the merchants who continued to trade with the French throughout the war were daring and resourceful in continuing trade.
Psych of the Protagonist Born in Toronto, Ontario; Timothy Findley is known for his great work in literature and playwriting. Throughout the year, he has been able to capitulate many of his readers through his novel The Wars. Sigmund Freud, a well-known developer of psychology itself came up with a way to analyze text by looking at different characters and explores the psych of any given character or even the author. In the Wars the protagonist; Robert Ross, enlists himself in the Canadian army due to the tragic death of his disabled sister, Rowena.
I Just saw Mr. Jonathan he came in my store and said “Have you heard we just lost Charleston, England has it under control” They were lead by Major General Benjamin Lincoln and he lost by the British Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton and his army of 10,000 at Charleston, South Carolina. He captured 3,000 Patriots and a lot of equipment and ammunition. During the siege England only lost 250 men. I replied with “What if the use those men and come north and kill us all” Jonathan said “ I don’t know what we will do we must get prepared we can’t loose with all the work we have put into this war we have risked every thing”.
It is sometimes difficult for individuals to settle the discrepancy between truth and illusion, and consequently they drive others away, by shutting down. Mrs. Ross, in The Wars by Timothy Findley, is seen as brittle while she is attending church, and cannot deal with the cruel reality of the war and therefore segregates herself from the truth by blacking it out. As a result, she loses her eyesight, and never gets to solve the clash between her awareness of reality and the actuality of the world. She hides behind a veil, and her glasses to distance herself from reality. Mrs. Davenport has to wheel her around in Rowena’s chair to keep her awake, so she doesn’t harbour up subconscious feeling within her dreams, which she is unable to deal with.
Beginning early in life, people establish different values and beliefs through personal experience, leading them to commit to preserving certain ethics and ideals. These commitments serve as the cornerstone of one’s identity and heavily influence the life decisions one makes. In Timothy Findley’s The Wars, the protagonist, Robert Ross has a clear commitment to preserving the purity of life and innocence. Thrown into the hectic environment of World War 1, Robert struggles against all odds to preserve the integrity of his own humanity.
War Without Mercy “Ultimately, it brought about a revolution in racial consciousness throughout the world that continues to the present day.” (Dower 4). During World War II, besides morbid deaths, racism was one of the ultimate factors which sparked this tragic period of time. With the use of propaganda such as cartoons, films, and several other media induced strategies, the extreme hatred between the Americans and Japanese was increasing.
Most people can understand that when a soldier comes back from war, he is not going to be the same. He has seen too much and done too much to still be the innocent boy he had been. In the novel, The Sorrow of War by Bao Ninh, he not only puts the effect of war for soldiers, but for regular civilians as well. The novel is saying that war affects females even though they could not fight in war. The message is conveyed through female characters that have felt sorrow and emptiness during and after the war.
