Chess and Street Fighter: The Gratification in Separate Competitions

The aggressive intensity present in the air when playing chess or Street Fighter is a sentiment that is adored among their competitors, “In chess one cannot control everything. Sometimes a game takes an unexpected turn, in which beauty begins to emerge. Both players are always instrumental in this” (Kramnik). The intensity in each approaching situation is something to behold, and the satisfaction in stealing the victory is potent in each respective game, but I continue to believe that fighting games like Street Fighter are underappreciated compared to chess. Therefore, making a player’s mindset the most important factor between winning or losing. A correct mindset for Street Fighter and chess requires the player to have to make decisions that put him at little risk while attempting to assail their opponent to the best of their ability. It also demands that a player must have the intention to win as well as have fun, for missing one will hurt their performance significantly. However, in Street Fighter there isn’t time to make a decision because if time is taken to think the player will be punished due to its fast pace. Conversely, chess allows a player time to make their decision because of its slower more deliberate pace. More obviously, Street Fighter and chess differ in how you master attacking with your characters or pieces. Street Fighter requires remembering an entire list of inputs and then how to link them together into a combo which is far from a short and simple task. Meanwhile, chess requires processing the possible outcomes if certain pieces are used, and that’s something that comes with experience. However, both have very different atmospheres that reflect the slow, deliberate play of chess and the fast, bombastic play of Street Fighter. Generally speaking, chess has long and stressful matches, but the opponent is usually respectful of your decision. The atmosphere when is very calm normally, and the few spectators present are silent. On the other hand, Street Fighter has short matches less than two minutes and spectators are nearly always loud and explosive. Furthermore, there aren’t many girls at Street Fighter tournaments (or any video game tournaments for that matter because there is unfortunately sexism present. The few women that are prevalent in the Street Fighter scene have said that they are discriminated against because of their sex or they’re victim to aggressive harassment. Moreover, trash talk is something that is plentiful in the Street Fighter community regardless of sex which some adore and some dislike. However, most feel that trash talk fuels the excitement in playing the game competitively. Beyond the similarity that these two games have tournaments, they’re yin and yang when comparing the differ The stronger sense of excitement that exists at Street Fighter tournaments is one of the most significant reasons people enjoy it more than a chess
