The Great Debate: Tradeoff With all the advances in technology and media, privacy is a major issue facing the people of today. The ethical dilemma of privacy in today’s world is an interesting topic. Many people do not like how little privacy they have online. Other people, enjoy the better security they receive in exchange for less privacy. Privacy is one of modern society’s great debates. Very few people even know how much privacy they do or do not have. The truth is that there is no privacy in today’s world because of technology and social media. This article continues to inform the reader on what information is being recorded, saved, and what the information is used for. Google users have their information filtered by algorithm after algorithm. This filtering process can be dangerous because of huge masses of people a potential hack or leak would affect. The amount of personal data Google holds is unquantifiable, and a data leak could lead to countless lives being negatively affected. While the internet allows infinite amounts of data to be stored, it also allows for infinite amounts of data to be stolen. Hacking can affect even the most secure system. Many frequent online users have their information stolen and do not find out until it is too late.
The government's role in the privacy debate is extremely controversial. The government monitors online data for many reasons. The most important reason is to prevent crimes. Terrorism to be exact. The government has the ability to monitor personal online information, because that information can be crucial in keeping a country safe from terrorism.
Personally, I am more than willing to sacrifice my online privacy in exchange for national safety. The argument against identity theft is invalid in this situation because identity theft preludes the internet. The data we all provide to platforms like Google is the main reason these platforms are free to use. Our data is the fuel behind products such as Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Drive, Gmail, and many others. Without our data, a large amount of the internet would not be able to function.
