The Allure of the Great Jay Gatsby From the very beginning Gatsby is a character that creates an unrivaled feeling of mystery and wonder. Nick tells us of how people all across these affluent areas debate over where Gatsby has come from and how he came across this fortune. Nick himself is thoroughly confused, all the way until he meets Gatsby. In the initial moment Nick just assumes he’s speaking with another party-goer, however he’s speaking to the myth that is Mr. Jay Gatsby and he is surprised by how regular Gatsby truly is; there’s nothing grotesque or intimidating about his appearance or character. To the contrary there’s something different about Gatsby, something truly inspiring and fully unique. At first Nick can’t identify what it is about Gatsby that is so great about him at first but soon he discovers it’s his overwhelming to dream and hope which is unrivaled by anyone else he’s ever met. …show more content…

He was born into a life where he had no prospects at all, most “realistic” people would’ve decided that their fate was decided and become resigned to such a life. This however was not how Gatsby wanted to see the story of his life play out, he from a young age wanted to better himself and take steps to get away from the chains of a life of poverty. Gatsby in his own mind thought he was special and was destined for something incredible. This whole process of growth that lead him to where he is at the beginning of the novel makes him intrinsically different from the other wealthy characters such as Tom Buchanan for example. Gatsby did not come from old money, he wasn’t sent to Yale to get a quality education, he instead swam out and joined Dan Cody to have adventures and live fully. Gatsby is such a breath of fresh air from the morally depraved people of the East and West Egg. None of them, Nick included had to do what Gatsby did to reach this point in
