“For many the American Dream has become a nightmare” Bernie Sanders, 2016 Presidential Candidate, during one of his campaigns. This quote although short displays the sense that in current America with how everything is going, the American Dream has now turned to a complete mess that no one wants to go through with. The overwhelming stress and other psychological pressures that comes with the American Dream is not worth it for some people and actually can cause more harm than good for them. They would rather be mentally health than end up psychologically damaged in order to reach the so called American Dream. Nothing about it is real. Not a single aspect of the American Dream featured in the novel is real. A novel full of cheaters and liars that are incredibly shallow-- there is not much more to be expected of these characters. Every complaint stated by these characters is a complaint easily fixed by the money they did not have to work particularly hard for. Gatsby’s whole purpose is to be with the Daisy. Due to Daisy’s shallowness he was forced to lie about how he got his wealth. His constant lies made it hard for him to keep his facades up. As well as Daisy’s apparent constant want for more he can never keep up. Gatsby did have to extreme determination to win Daisy’s love. He worked for five years after the war in order to create a life he felt that he could proudly boast to Daisy and show off that he was worthy. He threw parties to hopefully catch her attention and she would one day come waltzing in. He never fully reached the American Dream because he was murdered and was never able to reach the full potential that he had. But since he lost Daisy what was he left to work for. No one in the Great Gatsby deserved their wealth. Jordan gained her wealth through a sport that she cheated at, Tom is a cheating man that earned his money from his inheritance, and Gatsby got his wealth by bootlegging. In the definition of the American Dream by James Truslow Adams in 1931, "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" regardless of social class or circumstances of birth. The American Dream is a seemingly unattainable idea created way back when in order to create a sense of hope in the new land of America. As well as when immigrants began coming to America in hopes for a fresh start. As quoted by Jill Robinson, founder of the Animals Asia Foundation, “The American Dream, the idea of the happy ending, is an avoidance of responsibility and commitment.” This quote emphasizes how much of a literal dream the American Dream actually is. To be free of responsibility is to be rid of motivation and to live in denial. It is a happily ever after that avoids the true laws of accountability and dedication. These authors have done little to show the American Dream can be achieved by honesty which is probably why honesty is not included in the defintion. By definition the American Dream is not achievable and due to how hard it is the achieve the standards are continuously
