Why is Gatsby ‘Great’? Does Gatsby deserve to be addressed as ‘great’? The Great Gatsby is an American novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The title itself describes one of the major characters, Gatsby, as great. Why is this? Its because of Gatsby’s immense wealth, but that is just the surface of his character. Does Gatsby really deserve to be called ‘Great’? The answer to this question is yes, Gatsby does deserve to be called great. Why? It is because of his dedication, his dedication to achieving the American dream, his extreme wealth, and his goals. Gatsby is a very beautifully written character and has many deep layers to him. Gatsby threw extravagant parties every weekend, which hundreds would attend. Gatsby was not much of a participant of his parties; he would only hold them and observe. Even while holding these parties, it seemed like Gatsby was busy with other business jobs since he is always interrupted by his butlers when someone is on the phone, most likely to talk about business plans. In chapter 1 his house is mentioned to be huge, “...it was a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden. it was Gatsby’s mansion.” It is mentioned in chapter 4 that Gatsby also has a car, which is not common to have in the 1920s, “He saw me looking with admiration at his car... It was a rich cream color, bright with nickel, swollen here and there in its monstrous length with triumphant hat-boxes and supper-boxes and toolboxes, and terraced with a labyrinth of wind-shields that mirrored a dozen suns.” It is implied Gatsby had gotten a custom job on his car, since usually the cars in the 1920s were black, as Tom’s car was. In the story it is mentioned that when he was younger he had a list of goals written revealed in chapter 9 “GENERAL RESOLVES No wasting time at Shafters or [a name, indecipherable] No more smoking or chewing, Bath every other day, Read one improving book or magazine per week Save $5.00 {crossed out} $3.00 per week, Be better to parents.” In that sentence, Gatsby has a routine he wrote for himself when he was younger. It is praiseworthy to see that even from an early age he knew what he wanted and how to get it. Gatsby was ahead of his time, and he worked hard, no denying that. Gatsby’s father also admired how he had written his schedule down. Gatsby is great, to Nick, and to his father.
