The Great Gatsby is about a man, Nick Carraway, and his life in New York in 1922 as he searched for his dreams. Nick moves into a small house next a millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and becomes friends with him. Gatsby came to Nick to help him reunite with his love Daisy, who happens to be his cousin who is married to another rich man. Nick gets drawn into the world of the wealthy and it is a tale of impossible love, tragedy, and dreams. The book takes place in New York in 1922. World War 1 justed ended not too long ago, the stock market was booming at this time, and it was the jazz age: flappers, jazz music, and parties. It was the Roaring 20’s. The book talks about old money vs new money. Since the stocks were booming the middle class was growing and more people were earning more money. Gatsby was new money and Tom Buchanan was old money. Also at this time smoking was very popular and Drinking, even though it was illegal at this time. Scott Fitzgerald. He immersed himself into his time period and it was also said that his great novels were based on his own drama filled life. He told Maxwell Perkins, his editor “I wanted to create something greater, with this work: a purely creative work — not trashy imaginings as in my stories but the sustained imagination of a sincere and yet radiant world”. Since the book is nonfiction he introduces the event or time period by the way the characters talk, act and also what is happening around them. Like for instance, Gatsby always says “old sport”, threw great parties (with jazz music and flapper girls), he was in world war 1 and is new
