The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a novel that explores the concept of the American Dream. The American Dream is the idea that anyone can achieve success and prosperity through hard work and determination regardless of background. Fitzgerald employs his characters and the theme of the American Dream to create a masterpiece.
The main character, Jay Gatsby, is a self-made millionaire who has achieved the American Dream. However, more than his wealth and success is needed to win over his love for Daisy. Gatsbys idea in life is if he can win Daisy back, he will have achieved the ultimate goal of the American Dream. The East egg was a more socially desirable location and the West egg was the more industrial working-class area. People who were in the more rich egg thought they were better than the people in the less rich egg. There was a lot of competition which led to no good. The east egg was better than the west and Nick and Gatsby lived in the west egg, “I lived at the west egg- well, the less fashionable of the two” (Fitzgerald 5). I think they always wanted to live in the better egg, especially Nick, he wanted to prove he was better than Gatsby and could be a better husband to Daisy. If everyone just lived in one egg no would one have to compare themselves to one another and there would not be as much competition then a lot of the conflicts may be with Daisy would've calmed down. Nick wanted to be better than Gatsby but he felt like he could not because he knew there was something deep between him and Daisy, a deep love connection that he could not stop. Evidently the east and west eggs created an internal war in Gatsby and Nicks's heads and it lead to Gatsby just being more motivated to work harder and harder to win back
