What is the American Dream? According to F. Scott Fitzgerald in his book, “The Great Gatsby,” wealth is the American Dream. Throughout his book Fitzgerald shows how people are not treated equal based on wealth and gender. This book does not show the American Dream to be what the Declaration of Independence states which is,
“All men are created equal and have the rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.”
In the book “The Great Gatsby,” Fitzgerald shows how life was in the 1920’s.

Myrtle was married to a poor man name George. Myrtle was having an affair with Tom Buchanan who is a wealthy man. She hoped that Tom would leave his wife Daisy so she could marry him and have the wealthy life he had. One night Myrtle and Tom were at the apartment where they carried on their affair and Myrtle was taunting Tom about Daisy. Before Daisy met Tom she met Jay Gatsby who she fell in love with. Gatsby went away to war and then Daisy met Tom. Daisy thought for sure she had found the American dream with Tom. It didn’t take her long to figure out that she didn’t love Tom and of his affair with Myrtle. Daisy and Tom had a daughter together which Daisy was not really happy about. She felt that women weren’t treated equal. When her daughter was born she said, “I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.”(Fitzgerald, 17) Tom Buchanan was borne into wealth. Tom never had to work for anything. Tom was a very deceitful person whom thought he had the perfect life.
