Here’s a question, do you know what love is? Do you know the types of ways love can be shown? What about Daisy.. And her concept of love, is her concept really a real concept out there? The Great Gatsby has lots of concepts of love, but some seem to be twisted. Some characters go off and cheat, but try to justify it, some characters love get’s to the point of being obsessed and changing yourself entirely just to get with them, in the end lots of the relationships become unhealthy. And so, in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Daisy doesn’t understand the concept of love. Going right in, Daisy and Tom have an unhealthy relationship that is purely built off of money, and being rich. According to The Great Gatsby, “She never loved you, did …show more content…

This relationship gives off the vibe of someone who’s a puppy because of how cute they look, but when it comes to feeding, giving them water, bathing.. The person will just abandon them for that. For example.. “She’s asleep, She’s three years old, Havent you ever seen her?” “Never,” “well you ought to see her, she’s-”(10) This quote highlights that by this point, Daisy only loves Pammy since she is able to show her off to her friends, her family. Like a prized possession, as with everything else, she simply doesn’t want to live with that. Which will be the next thing I get into, Fitzgerald writes, “Daisy sat back upon the couch, the nurse took a step forward and held out her hand, “Come, Pammy!” “Goodbye sweetheart”(117). The relationship where Gatsby was judged based off his wealth, and was really only wanted once he became rich. According to Fitzgerald, he writes, “He knew Daisy was extraordinary, but he didn’t realize just how extraordinary a “nice” girl could be. She vanished into her rich house, into her rich, full life, leaving Gatsby- nothing.”(149) This information illustrates that despite Daisy’s nice looks and seemingly kind heart, which really attracted Gatsby to like her. It was unfortunate knowing she only has love for expensive things, love for a rich life, love for someone who can do everything for her while being rich. Which was something Gatsby did not have at the time. And so, she did not wait for him, and ran off to Tom, and that rich house. The other thing that needs to be taken into perspective is when Daisy is at Gatsby’s place. Fitzgerald writes, “They’re beautiful shirts,” she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds, “It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such-such beautiful shirts.”(92) The important idea in the text is when I dug into this further, this is during a time when Daisy was getting memories of the two being together. And knowing she wants to be with him is likely because of how rich he’s become, but she’s stuck in a relationship with Tom, and his rich life. And instead of wanting to say what really was going on, she talks about how beautiful the shirts are.
