The American Dream was an ethos that was prominent during the 1920's when everything seemed joyous and prosperous since the economy did not seem to slow down; therefore when the stock market crashed it bewildered everyone. people making big money. Many people call the 20’s the sign of the times since the dream was that people could become rich beyond their wildest dreams. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was one of many Jazz age modernist writers that got big during that time, writing many novels and short stories that involved satire and the idealism of the age. The book, The Great Gatsby, is a narration of the main character, Nick Carraway, when he meets Jay Gatsby; a man from the Midwest who quickly became rich. Since this was a time in America where Economic boom was happening, people were beginning to fond over with rags to riches stories. People have described this book as “naive dream based on the fallacious assumption that material possessions are synonymous with happiness, harmony, and beauty”(Fahey). Similarly to Fitzgerald, Gatsby sees quantity as quality, and cost with value; yet, while both lack culture and sophistication, they still have a heart of gold. Fitzgerald almost lost Zelda, Gatsby lost her before he could ever really have her. Gatsby was the lucky one out of both of them, he was untouched by the moral evil that surrounded him, and did what he thought he was being generous and good to get to his dream. Moreover, the book appears to be autobiographical when it comes to Daisy and Tom’s relationship. Their relationship is similar to what Zelda and Fitzgerald’s relationship since one of them cheats but they still stayed together for preserving a facade of social respectability. In this case, with the corruption of money and trying to pursue happiness, many critics declare that all men are not created equal. As stated in literary magazine, “Everything in the book is symbolic, from Gatsby's ersatz mansion to the wild and aimless parties which he gives there, yet everything seems so "true to life" that some critics continue to see that novel primarily as a recreation of the '20s” (Samuels). His writing style is more complex since he likes to use big sentences,which may seem that he is wandering with his thoughts, but there is a path the he is following. According to Qwiklit, they claim that Fitzgerald was inspired by authors such as Joseph Conrad and Sherwood Anderson, who have similar writing styles that are long, dark, dense and gives a sense of overlooming doom. This is evident throughout his most of his books with the giving allusions to Alcoholism, mental illness and marital issues, which aggressively contrast his glamorous public image. However, with so many people calling Fitzgerald and the book one is of the best American literary works ever and has withstood the test of time with its 100 year anniversary coming 2025, not everyone loves Gatsby.
