The Great Gatsby is a tragic novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, set in the 1920s. The story has many elements that relate to the Grail Legend. The Grail Legend is set in the same world as King Arthur, but is about a fertility character named Percival. He has a rags-to-riches story where his lucky experiences with people lead him to achieve knighthood and eventually his own kingdom. The Grail Legend in today’s terms is the American Dream. The main character of The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby, is chasing this American Dream because he feels he is meant for it, as Percival was. In The Great Gatsby, Tom Buchanan stays the whole story and guards everything that Gatsby desires and keeps throughout the novel. Unlike in the Grail Legend, Tom Buchanan wins his American Dream as the villain at the end when our hero, Gatsby, fails. Not only does he have Daisy, but a house in East Egg, the most sought-after place to live. East Egg in the Grail Legend is a Magical Kingdom where Percival ends up ruling. The special thing about the Magic Kingdom is how exclusive it is. Across the courtesy bay the white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered among the water, and the history of the summer really began on the evening I drove over there to have dinner with the Tom Buchanans (5). East Egg is not a place you can just go and buy a house. Only the elite of the elite can live in East Egg. Those who do not possess the old money qualities or extreme wealth must receive and invite an elite to come to the Magical Kingdom of East Egg. East Egg is the physical goal of the American Dream.
