Love is defined as a quality or feeling of strong or constant affection for and dedication to another. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, contains romantic relationships throughout the book. Most importantly, the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy. Daisy and Gatsby were both in love in 1917. However, it shortly ended when Gatsby was drafted into WW1. Leaving Daisy to move on and marry Tom Buchanan. But is Gatsby truly in love with Daisy? Or is he obsessed with her? Gatsby is obsessed with Daisy Buchanan. For the following three reasons: One, their past relationship, and two, Daisy’s status, and three, Daisy’s beauty. One is their past relationship. Gatsby and Daisy were reunited after five years of not seeing each other. For example, “We haven't seen each other for many years,” said Daisy.” “Five years next November” (Fitzgerald 87). This quote proves that they have not seen each other for five years. Moreover, how Gatsby remembers the month of November is when it will be five years. In their past, they were in love. Yet, after years have passed, both moved on with their lives and are now different people. But, people who were once in love, try again, are only in love with the memories they used to have. Throughout the story, Gatsby brings up Daisy's voice a lot. This concludes: Gatsby finds the beauty in Daisy’s voice. For example, “I think that voice held him most, with its fluctuating, feverish warmth, because it couldn't be over dreamed–that voice was a deathless song” (Fitzgerald 96). This quote proves that Daisy’s voice sticks with Gatsby. However, Gatsby mentions how her voice is full of money. For example, “Her voice is full of money,” he said suddenly” (Fitzgerald 120). This quote states that all he can think of about Daisy is her money. But she still finds her voice attractive and the beauty in
